Scouts BSA

For boys ages 11 – 17

There are two Scouts BSA troops for boys in Ridley that own their own neighborhood scout cabins: Troop 43 in Woodlyn, and Troop 339 in Leedom Estates. All three offer year-round opportunities for boys to explore the outdoors on our monthly outings, to serve our communities, grow their leadership skills, and develop life-long friendships.

Weekly meetings

Our troops meet on different evenings each week (Monday or Wednesday) so you can choose a troop whose night works best for you.

Incredible Adventures

Our boys have access in outings unavailable to most youth their age. We set out to destinations all over the mid-Atlantic almost every month, from camping on cliffs overlooking the Chesapeake, to sleeping on the battlefields at Gettysburg. We ski, kayak, deep-sea fish, and climb rock faces. We spend a week at a Scouting America Summer Camp each year, and our older scouts participate in a transformative high adventure outings—in the past few years, we’ve hiked 120 miles in New Mexico, tagged sharks and hoisted sails in the Florida Keys, and attended National Jamboree in West Virginia. This summer, our scouts trekked through Yosemite National Park in California, summiting two peaks, including Half Dome.

We are “boy-led”

That means our Scouts run their own “club.” They plan their own activities. They learn skills, then teach them to one other. They develop menus for our camping trips, and they cook and clean up after themselves. They run their own meetings. Why? It all goes back to teaching them to be self-reliant leaders and learning valuable life skills. Our adult leadership is only there to help guide them along the way as mentors, to help them learn from their mistakes in a safe but challenging atmosphere.

A crowded Eagles’ nest

Since our founding in 1910, more than 150 Ridley scouts have earned the coveted rank of Eagle. “Earned” being the key word. Every scout that’s ever worn the badge knows what it means to live their lives by the tenets of the Scout Oath and Law.

Building leaders through moving and doing

Thanks to steady volunteer leadership, our Troops are well funded and equipped. We provide tents, camping stoves, cooking gear, lanterns, firewood, and many of the needs for our outings. We own our own troop trailers for transporting our gear, and provide transportation to/from most of our outings. Scouts are responsible for their own uniforms, sleeping gear, backpack, mess kit, and Scout Handbook.
